7 Ways to Buy Meaningful and Thoughtful Gifts

It’s almost Christmas and that means it’s time to buy gifts for those we love. But what about when you can’t just buy any gift? What about when you need the gift to show them that you really care?

Well, you’re in luck. You see, gift giving is somewhat of a superpower I have.  Ever since I was little I have enjoyed pulling off the perfect surprise or being the one to give the best gift.  A lot of people think that the best gift is an expensive one, but that is not always the case. In fact, it’s rarely the case.  Sure, quality is important, especially when the gift is for someone you really care about, but I think the most important thing is for the gift to feel personal.  When a gift is well thought out, it should not only make the person feel excited, but also known.  Truly, being known is a gift in and of itself, and a perfect gift is one that shows them you know who they are.

Saying that, I realize that not everyone is great at coming up with ideas so here are 7 questions to help get your creative gift-giving juices flowing:

1. What Are Their Hobbies?

Do they love golfing?  Fishing? Reading? Hiking? Boating? Photography?  Writing? Sports? Travel?  Are there any tools of the trade that would support their hobby? Are there nice coffee table type books on the subject? Fun accessories?

2. What Is Their Favorite TV Show or Movie?

Is there a funny tee shirt, mug, quote?  Is there a piece of awesome but affordable memorabilia? Could you get a star from the show to tweet them? Could you arrange to go to a taping?  What about renting out a theater and inviting their friends to a showing? Or maybe a themed surprise party using lots of references to the show?

3. What Big Thing Happened to Them This Year?

Did they get a new job? Take a big trip? Have a baby? Is there something you could get them to commemorate that event or help them adjust?  Maybe a map of a place they visited?

4. What Goal Are They Working Towards?

Are they writing a book?  Going to school? Starting a business? Is there something you could get them to inspire them or fun tools, software, or gadgets that would help them on their journey?

5. What Experience Would They Love to Have?

Is there a concert coming to town? A musical? Would they love a flying lesson? A surprise weekend trip with you or with their friends?  Maybe you could arrange for them to meet their favorite author or maybe something as simple as a fancy dinner downtown.  I often ask myself what they would love to do more than anything else in the world and then work backwards from there.  Sure I can’t afford a dream vacation to Europe, but what would be the next best thing?

6. What Are Your Personal Memories Together?

Do you have an inside joke? Did you go somewhere with them this year? Did you experience something special together? Could you have a special picture framed? Or better yet, have it made into a sketch by an artist and then framed.  Could you get a personalized tee shirt made with one of your sayings on it?  What about a seemingly random gift that only the two of you would know the symbolism of?

7. What Would YOU Think an Awesome Gift Would Be?

Some gifts are just awesome.  Is there a fun new product out? Some new technology?  Super comfy pajamas? Or bedsheets? Or both?  Who wouldn’t love a nice leather bag or an awesome watch? When all else fails, do for them what you wish someone would do for you and I’ll bet they will love it, too.
